![]() We spent an August day at the under-air conditioned arch. Once at the top of the arch be forewarned that it sways a lot in the wind (like many tall attractions) so if that is going to freak you out, avoid that too! Anyway - book ahead if you think it is going to be busy -and GO!! There is (not free) public garage parking near the arch there is also a metro stop there so getting there from downtown St. with you on your visit and be prepared to go through extensive security screening. Also be aware that you must go through airport style security screening to enter the bottom of the arch, or even the museum, so do not bring knives, pepper spray or (duh) weapons, etc. are all FREE - it's only the ride to the top of the arch that costs money. at the bottom of the arch is quite good though so if you go with a group and just don't want to go to the top of the arch, the museum and the surrounding park area, as well as the neighboring restaurant and nightlife area, are all still very worthwhile. This is the only way to the top of the arch so I just wanted to write a review because if you are claustrophobic at all, skip this or you will be miserable. They seat five SLENDER people at a very tight squeeze (I have no idea how even mildly overweight people do this thing) and you are crammed in there together with little airflow and a bunch of cranking, rickety sounds for about 4 minutes on the way up and three on the way down. I will post the photos of the pods that you have to ride in. ![]() A lot of people were freaking out about it. ![]() The one thing I absolutely will say is the ride up can be (for a lot of people) extremely scary. Louis where I felt comfortable walking around alone. Louis everyone is going to ask you if you went up the arch or not - so go! I was traveling as a single woman alone and this (and the neighboring restaurant/nightlife area) is one of the few nice places in St. I did not have a lot of crowds, I did not wait in a long line, I did not buy tickets in advance, and no one was rude to me. Workers started digging at it after the first ceremonial groundbreaking in April 2015 and plan to the opening for July 3rd 2018.I did not have the problems that other reviewers are talking about here. The Museum now hosts a more inviting curved, glass entrance which draws visitors in and then beneath the Arch grounds. The newly added 46,000 square feet to the old park, is now slightly over 103,000 square feet. This latest improvements are meant to improve access and to revamp the underground museum, where not much had changed since it opened in 1976. Next on the list: gallery and accessibility improvements to the Old Courthouse, with a completion target of 2020. The museum opening is one keystone in the latest $380 million evolution of the Arch grounds, which were cleared starting in 1939 to make way for a memorial to western expansion. It serves as a drop-off point for buses, offers shaded rest for visitors and a gathering place for the city. This square west of the Arch now connects to the park grounds, thanks to the walled and noise-protected park over the highway - a lid over the depressed lanes of Interstate 44. The expanded visitor's center and museum, which opens to the public on Tuesday, marks the last major piece of the $380 million renovation of the Arch grounds.
